1970's Slang


Any of these sound familiar? Here are some of the slang terms that were coined or popular in the late 1970's:

  • Airhead: stupid person  
  • Bad: nice, cool  
  • Bitchin': way cool, awesome.  
  • Bogart: to hog something, keep it to your self, be selfish. Usually meant holding on to a joint too long without passing it on.  
  • Bogus: phony, lame, a disappointment. "That was a bogus concert". 
  • Book, booking: To leave or move in a hurry; to run quickly, usually away from something. "The cops were after him so he was  really booking." or "Let's book."  
  • Buff: physically well built. "He sure is buff.  
  • Boogie: to dance; also can mean to leave. "Want to go to her house? Sure let's boogie". 
  • BummerA depressing, negative event or thing. "What a bummer".  
  • Burn: when you've been dissed, proved wrong. 
  • Burn-out: a regular user of drugs.  "He's such a burn out".
  • Catch You On The Flip side': see you later.  
  • Decent:Very cool; something you are excited about. "The Kiss concert is going to be so decent." 

  • Don't Be Such A Spaz: A 'spaz' was someone that was accident prone,clutzy, or just acting stupid.
  • Doobie: joint, marijuana cigarette.
  • Fake Out: To deceived trick. "We faked him out good!"
  • Flash Back: Sudden memory of a past time or event. Feeling high /acid flash back.
  • Foxy: Very attractive girl, "She's pretty Foxy!"
  • Gag Me With A Spoon: something weird or disgusting .
  • Get Down & boogie: dance
  • Gross: anything disgusting, unacceptable, rude or unpleasant.
  • Head: someone who is a pot head or druggie.
  • How's It Hangin': how are things going with you; how are you feeling.
  • Later: See you at another time.
  • Let's Blow This Pop Stand: Let's leave.
  • Let's Boogie!! Let's get out of here or leave this place.
  • Man: an word usually added to the end of a sentence. "Hey, man". How's it going man?" 
  • Mellow Out: Chill out; Calm Down
  • Narc: Tattler; Someone who turns other people in, snitches
  • Pardy, Hardy: to seriously party!
  • Psyched: Excited. "I'm so psyched about this REO Speedwagon concert."
  • Psyche out: to trick someone, fool.
  • Radical: Cool,awesome,sweet. "That was RADICAL man." 
  • Scarf: To eat with great appetite and gusto.  "I scarfed down the entire bag of chips".
  • Sit On It: Made popular by "Happy Days," it means basically "shut up," "go to hell," or some other exasperated expression.
  • Sit On It & Rotate: crude insult, usually said to someone while flipping them the bird.
  • Smokey: used in the C.B language to define a cop.
  • Split: To Leave. "I'm gonna split"
  • Stoned: high on dope; wasted.
  • Stoner: someone who does alot of drugs.
  • Streak: To run in public in the nude. Very popular in the "70's.
  • Take A Chill Pill: Calm down, cool out. 
  • That's Bogus: That's a raw deal, That's not fair.
  • That's Sick!' :To describe something odd or unusual; something suspect but also intriguing. "Sick!"
  • Toking Up:The act of smoking weed.
  • Turkey: Synonymous with "jerk" or "idiot".
  • What's Happenin' Man: How's it going? What's up?
  • What's Shakin'?: Casual greeting; equivalent to "What's Happening?", "How's it going?"
  • Wicked: Cool' as 'That Boston concert was wicked.'  
  • You're So Stunned: Meaning the person acted or said something stupid, dumb.
